Turkish prosecutor files summary of proceedings against CHP leader

An Ankara prosecutor has filed a summary of proceedings against the country’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, demanding his immunity be lifted for insulting Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu.

The Ankara Chief Prosecutor’s Office drafted the summary of proceedings against the CHP leader, citing article 83 of the Constitution, which states that a member of the Turkish Parliament will not he held liable for their statements and expressions during parliamentary proceedings unless the assembly decides otherwise for repeating or revealing the statements outside.

The Ankara Chief Prosecutor’s Office sent the summary to the Justice Ministry, requesting his immunity to be lifted and quoting Kılıçdaroğlu’s statements from a television program he attended last year in June.

We launched a lawsuit for damages worth five kuruş [0.05 Turkish Liras] to show the public that he is not an honorable man; that he is worthless,” Kılıçdaroğlu had said, referring to Soylu.

In the meantime, an Ankara prosecutor launched a probe against CHP’s Bartın lawmaker Aysu Bankoğlu on charges of “terrorist propaganda” over statements she made on March 12.
