Turkish police crack down on outlawed groups prior to Labor Day

ANKARA

At least 11 outlawed group members were detained in an operation launched from Ankara, believed to be in preparation to organize “provocative rallies” before Labor Day on May 1, security sources said on April 29.

Ankara security and intelligence branch teams detained the suspects in Ankara, Istanbul, and the southern province of Adana, said the source requesting anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to media, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

The source said the suspects were members of the Turkish Communist Labor Party/Leninist (TKEP/L), Turkish Communist Party/Marxist-Leninist (TKP/ML) and the Turkish Liberation Party-Front/Revolutionary Path (THKP-C/DEV-YOL).

10 ISIL suspects detained in Adana

In another operation on April 29 in Adana, police detained 10 Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) suspects, four Turkish and six Syrian nationals, who were believed to be planning attacks on Labor Day.

The raids were conducted at the suspects’ houses in the city center. Following their health checkups, the suspects were taken to the provincial police station for their testimonies, the agency said.
