Turkish PM gives green light for intel chief's entry into politics

Earlier media reports had suggested that Fidan might enter into politics, with some sources saying he could become the new foreign minister if elected in June.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu signaled during a televised interview late on Feb. 4 that Hakan Fidan, the head of the National Intelligence Organization (MİT), may enter active politics in the June 7 general elections, a much debated issue up to now.

“He will make the best of any job in any place,” Davutoğlu said.

“He is brave, valiant and he stands his ground once he takes a step. There will be many fields in which he will serve the country, either in politics or in the bureaucracy. There are issues that we’ll evaluate about this. I will always be positive about him on any issue,” he added.

Earlier media reports had suggested that Fidan might enter into politics, with some sources saying he could become the new foreign minister if elected in June.

Should this be the case, Fidan would leave his current post, as those who run in the June general elections are obligated to resign before Feb. 10, but are allowed to return to their seat if not elected.

Many civil servants have begun testing the waters to run for the general elections, while the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has reportedly warned potential contenders not to resign before receiving approval from the party.
