Turkish league gets first Greek footballer

Greek international striker Theofanis Gekas has agreed to a move to Spor Toto Super League club Samsunspor, becoming the first Greek footballer to play in Turkey’s top league.The ex-Eintracht Frankfurt player will play on a six-month deal, with a unilateral option for a two-year extension, the Turkish club confirmed on Jan. 8. “We will continue to work hard to bring players in to ultimately help our side win games,” Samsunspor Chairman Kazım Gürol Yılmaz told NTV Spor.
Gekas spent 18 months at Eintracht and, despite scoring 16 Bundesliga goals in 34 appearances last campaign, the side were relegated to Germany’s second-tier. The striker has also made 55 appearances for the Greece national team.
