Turkish FM says KRG should cancel independence referendum

ANKARA

The Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) should cancel its recent independence referendum, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said on Oct. 26, adding that "freezing" the process is "not enough."

Earlier on Oct. 26, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had insisted that the Iraqi Kurdish independence referendum be declared void, in an apparent rejection of an offer by the KRG to "freeze" its push for independence as part of efforts to resolve the crisis through talks.

"We won't accept anything but its cancellation and the respect of the constitution," he said in a statement.
