Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu made a surprise visit to Iran on Aug. 18, while en route to India for a scheduled official visit, private broadcaster CNNTürk reported on Aug. 19.

Çavuşoğlu’s unannounced stop in neighboring Iran on Aug. 18 came after reports that he was planning to visit following Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s trip to Ankara.

The Turkish foreign minister discussed key regional issues, including the ongoing Syrian crisis, in his talks in Iran, the report said.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif had paid a visit to Ankara on Aug. 12, during which he held a meeting and joint press conference with Çavuşoğlu.
