Turkish envoy to Uganda recalled after wearing Trojan costume in ceremony

ANKARA

Turkish Ambassador to Uganda Sedef Yavuzalp was summoned to Ankara after footage of Republic Day reception on Oct. 29 drew a public criticism over her unusual choice of attire, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said on Nov. 3.

"An investigation has been launched immediately after we detected the photos and the ambassador was recalled," Çavuşoğlu said in a tweet.

The "historical" outfit of Yavuzalp and her aide during the reception had stirred controversy on social media.

Some users initially claimed that the outfits were homage to the Roman Empire, while others said it was from Greek mythology.

Yavuzalp's dress was actually a reference to Helen of Troy, it was later confirmed.

The ambassador defended herself by suggesting that it was the Year of Troy in Uganda.
