Turkish court approves life sentence for torture

The High Court of Appeals has approved a local court’s decision to give life sentences to three prison guards on charges of torturing and neglecting Engin Çeber, which resulted in Çeber’s death in 2008.The Court of Appeals 8th Department approved the life sentences of two prison guards, Selahattin Apaydın and Sami Ergazi, for torturing Çeber, and also approved the life sentence of the prison’s second head, Fuat Karaosmanoğlu, for neglecting to act over the torture. The guards were on duty at Istanbul’s Metris Prison in 2008, when Çeber died due to torture and maltreatment.
The court also approved the local court’s sentences of five other suspects, Nihat Kızılkaya, Mehmet Pek, Abdülmüttalip Bozyel, Murat İşler and Yemliha Söylemez.
