Turkish Airlines’ passenger numbers hit 25 million in first five months

The number of passengers carried by Turkish Airlines in the first five months of the year hit 25 million, representing a 7.8 percent increase compared to the same period of 2015, the company said in a statement to the public disclosure platform (KAP) on June 13. 

The flagship carrier also said its load factor, which measures an airline’s capacity usage, declined 3.6 percent to 73.8 percent in the period in question. 

While the number of passengers carried on domestic flights rose to 10.9 million in the first five months of the year, a 10.5 percent increase year on year, the number of passengers carried on international flights hit 14.1 million, a year-on-year increase of 5.8 percent between January and May 2015.

The number of international-to-international transfer passengers carried in the January-May period rose to 8.1 million, a 20.4 percent increase compared to the same period of 2015, according to the statement. 

The revenue passenger kilometers also rose by 10.7 percent year on year in the first five months of the year to over 50 million.

The number of Turkish Airlines aircraft increased from 277 to 322 during the time period in question, while it also added 15 more destinations, bringing the total to 289.

Turkish Airlines closed last year with a total of 61.2 million passengers carried over 12 months, a drop of around 12 percent from the previous year, while its 77.9 percent load factor represented a 1.4 percent drop.
