Turkish agency to help needy families in Gaza

GAZA CITY

Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) will provide fast-breaking meals (iftar) during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan to 1,000 people in the Gaza Strip every day, it said on May 7.

TİKA will also distribute thousands of food packages to needy residents of the village of Hajar al-Dik in the southeastern Gaza Strip.

Established in 1992, Turkey’s government-run aid agency is responsible for implementing the country’s developmental cooperation policies overseas.

The food aid to Gaza comes at time of heightened tension between the blockaded strip and the Israeli government.

The Associated Press reported that least 25 Palestinians were killed and at least four Israeli died in this weekend’s violent outburst.

The ceasefire went into effect early May 6 morning local time, and reports from Gaza and southern Israel suggest it’s holding, at least for now.
