Turkish agency provides food aid to Nigerian refugees

The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) has provided food to 168 refugee families fleeing Boko Haram violence in northern Nigeria, the agency was quoted by the state-run Anadolu Agency as saying on Feb. 29.     

TİKA is helping refugees in the Durumi camp outside the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

Turkey’s ambassador to Abuja, Hakan Çakıl, was present when the food was delivered.    
  
“The Turkish and Nigerian peoples are brothers,” he said. “Turkey will provide all necessary assistance to improve the conditions of displaced persons.”      

 He added that TİKA was about to send three aid trucks to Borno state, where the conflict is fiercest.  
    
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is currently on a tour of four West African states, including Nigeria.  
   
Turkey hosts around 2.7 million Syrian refugees, making it the country with the largest refugee population in the world.

Geographically located between war-torn Syria and Iraq in the southeast, Turkey has become a relatively secure land for migrants fleeing violence.
