Turkey’s Mideast envoys discuss where Arab Spring heading

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu convened Turkey’s Middle East envoys and ambassadors to some other key capitals July 11 in order to discuss latest developments in the region, particularly in Egypt and Syria.

The gathering of nearly 40 envoys would also focus on the likely course of the Arab Spring, a Turkish diplomat told the Hürriyet Daily News before the meeting.

Turkish envoys to the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France, the United Nations, the European Union and NATO were also present at the meeting.

Deputy Foreign Minister Naci Koru, undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry Feridun Sinirlioğlu and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s chief advisor İbrahim Kalın also participated in the meeting chaired by minister Davutoğlu.

Turkey’s ambassador to Cairo, Hüseyin Avni Botsalı, participated in the meeting by teleconference. The Turkish Foreign Ministry holds similar meetings annually, but this year’s gathering came after the military coup in Egypt, where President Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood was ousted by the army.
