Turkey today summoned the United States’ chargé d’affaires to Ankara, Jess Baily, days after reports emerged of covert U.S. surveillance of Turkish missions.

The claims that appeared in European media regarding the wiretapping of 38 diplomatic missions' phone calls by the U.S. National Security Agency are concerning, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement released today.

Turkish Foreign Ministry Deputy Undersecretary Ömer Önhon summoned the Washington envoy to reiterate Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu’s demands on U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

Davutoğlu asked John Kerry on July 2 for an explanation related to the bugging scandal on the sidelines of an Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) meeting in Brunei.

Baily was summoned as U.S. Ambassador Francis Ricciardone is out of Ankara today.
