The quality and standards of democracy should be improved, the newly elected chairman of the Independent Industrialists and Businessmen’s Association (MÜSİAD), Nail Olpak, said yesterday at a press conference, according to a press release by the association.

Policies and practices contributing to development and not restricting freedoms should continue to accomplish long term targets in the economy, Olpak said in his first press meeting. The government has set a goal for 2023, the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the republic, to make Turkey one of the world’s top 10 economies.

The increasing energy needs of the country require much closer relations with energy-rich eastern and northern neighbors, Olpak added.
