Turkey needs peace in the region to attract more tourists, the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said during a tourism conference held in the southern province of Antalya on Sept. 27.

“If you defend peace and want more tourists to visit the country, you must have good relations with your neighbors. You must use peaceful language. The word ‘tourism’ is actually the language of peace,” Kılıçdaroğlu urged the government. He noted that if a country made provocations of war, it would create a barrier in front of itself. The CHP leader stated that tourism developed more rapidly in the democratic countries, adding that dictatorial regimes couldn’t promote tourism. “Advancing democracy, using peaceful language, providing peace, solving existing problems and introducing Turkey to the world should be our principal goals,” he said.

Kılıçdaroğlu criticized the government’s lack of a consistent tourism policy.
