Thousands of people as well as several Turkish leaders, including President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and the leaders of opposition parties, attended a funeral ceremony held for Yazicioglu at Kocatepe Mosque in the capital Ankara.

A state funeral for the late leader also took place earlier in the day outside parliament.

Yazicioglu will be laid to rest in Ankara later on Tuesday.

The leader of the small opposition party was killed in a helicopter crash in the province of Kahramanmaras, as he was returning from a rally ahead of the local elections.

Yazicioglu was born in 1954 in the eastern Turkish province of Sivas, which he represents in parliament. He was married with two children.
