Turkcell will expand its workforce in some departments, including research and development, Koray Öztürkler, deputy chief executive officer in charge of investor relations and corporate communications, said in a telephone interview in Istanbul yesterday.

The Istanbul-based company opened a call center in Diyarbakır in October, employing 250 people. Turkcell will raise that number to 1,000 workers by the end of next year, Öztürkler said. It will also employ engineers to run so-called third-generation, 3G, services, he said.

On Nov. 28, Turkcell bid $504 million to win a 20-year license to operate Turkey's fastest 3G network. The company will begin the services by July if the auction is approved by February, Öztürkler said.
