Soprano Selva Erdener performs as a soloist of the famous Medea Opera.

Turkish soprano Selva Erdener, a soloist for the world-famous Medea Opera under Belgian composer Wim Henderickx, has been winning recognition for her performances during the Dutch and Belgian legs of her European tour.

The Dutch and Belgian tours have been drawing big interest, said Erdener, an Ankara State Opera and Ballet musician.

Speaking to Anatolia news agency, Erdener said she had been involved in music since the age of 16 and added that Henderickx had a great interest in Eastern culture.

“For the opera, they were looking for someone who would perform the opera in an ethnic style. After conducting interviews with artists from various countries, they listened to my album and liked it very much. Medea is an Eastern character. This is why they selected me,” Erdener said.

She said they had so far staged five performances. “Medea Opera is the synthesis of East and West. Most Turkish instruments are used in it. There are sounds that I have never performed so far. A piano does not have these sounds. A Western soprano could not have performed these sounds.”
