Troy Museum almost ready for opening

The Troy Museum is set to open soon, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the addition of the archaeological site of Troy to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

2018 had been introduced as the Year of Troy with the support of the Presidency and the Prime Ministry.

Troy Museum is counting down days until its inauguration, which authorities believe will be the most permanent heritage of the 2018 Year of Troy to Turkish tourism.

Throughout 2018, the northwestern province of Çanakkale is continuing to be a hub for international collaborations, culture, art, science and sport activities.

Built on an indoor area of approximately 11,000 square meters at the entrance of the archaeological site of Troy, the height of the museum building is designed to be equal to the pre-excavation height of ancient Troy.

The Troy Museum, one of the most important contemporary archaeological museums in the world and selected from among more than 150 projects by an expert jury in the National Architectural Design Competition, will be inaugurated soon with a ceremony.

Myths, legends of 5,000 years

The Troy Museum will host myths and legends of 5,000 years of history and introduce the civilization of Troy to the world by bringing eastern and western cultures together in Çanakkale.

Sculptures, sarcophaguses, inscriptions, altars, milestones, axes and cutters, terra cotta potteries, metal vessels, gold pieces, weapons, coins, bone objects and tools, glass bracelets, ornaments, figurines, glass and terra cotta scent bottles, tear bottles and many other special pieces that have witnessed the history of humankind will be displayed in the museum.

Historical artifacts from the inventory of Çanakkale Museum, coins from the İzmir Archeology Museum, Troy-originated 24 pieces of gold jewelry that have been returned to the country by the U.S. Penn Museum and Troy-originated necklaces, earrings, diadems, bracelets, head ornaments, chains, pendant heads, needles, necklace beads, Trojan gold double ring bracelets and human face stelas in the Ankara Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and Istanbul Archeological Museums will be exhibited in the Troy Museum.

Seven sections

The museum is divided into seven sections, starting from the entrance floor. The leading historical artifacts will be opened to visitors after meticulous works.

The Troas region will be introduced on the ground floor of the museum generally with its archaeological remains. The history of Assos, Tenedos, Parion, Alexandria Troas, Smintheion, Lampsakos, Tyhmbria, Tavolia and Imbros cities and information about the archaeological remains of these cities and historical artifacts from these periods will be exhibited.

Besides, the Polyxena Sarcophagus, which was unearthed in 1994 and represents the Persian sovereignty in Troas (and the incidents in the Trojan War), sculptures of Roman emperors and the statue of Triton (Kentauros), which was found in Parion in 2012, will also be presented to visitors on this floor.

The historical artifacts in the museum will be supported with written and visual panels, and presented with diorama and animations.
