Top general Eruygur’s health to be determined
ISTANBUL - Anatolia News Agency
The health condition of retired Gen. Şener Eruygur, who is being tried as a suspect in the ongoing Ergenekon case but not being held under arrest, will be observed by the Forensic Medicine Institution for three weeks to determine whether his health status would affect his competence to stand trial. When testifying in court, Eruygur had responded to the court’s questions by saying, “I don’t remember.”
Eruygur’s lawyer, Filiz Esen, had demanded a new medical evaluation for her client. The court decided that an earlier report from the Forensic Medicine Institution was still valid, yet decided to transfer Eruygur to the Forensic Medicine Institution’s Specialists’ Board.
Eruygur is charged with leading an armed terrorist organization and faces up to 246 years of prison time. Ergenekon is an alleged ultranationalist gang accused of planning to topple the government by staging a coup by spreading chaos and mayhem.
