Thursday Cinema returns to SALT Beyoğlu

Movies from many countries across the world will be available for Istanbul audiences at SALT Beyoğlu within the scope of the “Thursday Cinema” project. 

This year’s Thursday Cinema program examines the notion of “regeneration” through various forms of urban life, and how it simultaneously evokes a longing for a familiar past or a better future. 

The 2018 Spring screenings of Thursday Cinema, organized with the support of Garanti Mortgage, will be open to everyone free of charge in the Walk-in Cinema at SALT Beyoğlu until June 28. 

“Thanks to our valuable collaboration with SALT, it is an important step for the Garanti Mortgage brand to meet various masses around the themes of urban culture, architecture and urbanization ... During the five years of Thursday Cinema, we have reached 15,500 people with 87 film screenings. I believe this year’s program will draw interest too,” said Garanti Mortgage General Manager Murat Atay, speaking about the year’s program of Thursday Cinema. 

Starting from May 10, one of the Thursday Cinema movies will be Russian director Yuriy Bykov’s “The Fool,” which follows the protagonist Dima’s unavailing attempt to rescue a crumbling building - and all 820 of its residents. 

Christian Tod’s documentary “Free Lunch Society” will be on screen on May 17. Inspired by the familiar saying, “there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch,” interpreted by economists as the act of decision making requiring trading off one goal against another, Todd in turn poses the question: “What would you do if your income were taken care of?” 

Nigel Cole’s “Made in Dagenham,” Pablo Frasconi and Nancy Salzer’s “Survival of a Small City,” Wolfgang Becker’s “Good Bye Lenin!,” Philip Gnadt and Mickey Yamine’s “Gaza Surf Club,” Bertrand Bonello’s “Nocturama” and Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady’s “One of Us” will also be screened as part of the program.
