Three soldiers killed in clashes with PKK in Sur

Three Turkish soldiers were killed on late Feb. 10 and early Feb. 11 in clashes with outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants in the southeastern district of Sur, the Turkish General Staff has announced.

In a statement, the Turkish General Staff said three soldiers were severely injured in clashes with PKK terrorists in the Sur district of Diyarbakır, the largest city in southeastern Turkey, on Feb. 10. Two died the same day while the other soldier succumbed to his wounds later.

Two soldiers, gendarmerie Specialized Sgt. Osman Öz and Specialist Cpl. Kadir Genç, were killed in Sur late Feb. 10. Funeral ceremonies will be held for the two soldiers on Feb. 11.

Another soldier succumbed to his injuries on Feb. 11 despite all efforts, the General Staff announced on its website.

Meanwhile, on Feb. 9 seven security officials, including a captain, as well as two civil servants were killed in attacks by the PKK in southeastern districts. 

Two soldiers and one police officer were killed and one soldier and one policeman were injured in attacks in Diyarbakır and southeastern Şırnak province. 

Meanwhile, an armored police vehicle on patrol duty was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade at 10:10 p.m. in Şırnak’s Cumhuriyet Square on Feb. 9.

One officer, identified as Mehmet Güngördü, was killed at the site while a wounded police officer was taken to Şırnak State Hospital for treatment.
