Thousands of students take crucial YGS exam

The first phase of the national University Entrance Examination (YGS) was held yesterday, with a total of 1,851,326 students sitting. The exam was conducted across Turkey and North Cyprus in 167 exam centers and in 100,452 rooms.

In a first for the YGS, there were five questions on the subject of “Religious Culture and Morals.”

Students were not allowed to exit the halls in the first two hours and the last 15 minutes. It was also reported that some halls had CCTV cameras installed in order to secure a “safer exam system.” Students also said that security measures were tight, following alleged cheating controversy surrounding the exam in recent years.

Meanwhile in Kayseri, a father waiting for his son who was taking the exam had a heart attack and died. Turan Salur drove his son to the exam and parked his car nearby. Toward the end of the exam, Salur went to get his car and was later found near a wall of the parking lot.

Meanwhile, six “Dev-Lis” (Revolutionary High Schoolers) members chained themselves to the gate at the entrance of Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) headquarters in Ankara to protest “exams and child labor.” Police detained six members.
