Thousands of people bid farewell to Tarık Akan, a renowned Turkish actor who died of lung cancer at the age of 66 in Istanbul on Sept. 16, following a ceremony at the Muhsin Ertuğrul Theater on Sept 18.

Fans, colleagues, celebrities and a number of political figures, including main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaorğlu and former President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, were at the ceremony to share the Akan family’s grief.

A chorus from Taş Mektep, a primary school built by Akan, also took the stage during the ceremony.
