Terrorism can also be carried out through social media, EU Minister says at technology forum

Turkish EU Minister Egemen Bağış said social media had become "another avenue for terrorists," speaking during the opening of a technology forum in Istanbul on Oct. 24.
 
“Some people are converting social media into a disinformation platform. Unfortunately, terrorism is nowadays not only carried out by militants with weapons in their hands, but also sometimes by social media terrorists,” said Bağış, whose e-mails were recently leaked by the Turkish hacker group, RedHack.
 
“This is why international cooperation and legislation at EU standards regarding the protection of confidential information is extremely important,” he said, adding that the latest democratization package laid out the groundwork for this matter.

“By no means should any crime be left unanswered,” Bağış said.   
 
The CeBIT global conference on telecommunication technologies opened its doors on Oct. 24 to commence its anticipated exhibition of the latest products that IT companies have to offer.
 
Bağış said Turkey should be swift in adopting innovative communication technologies. “We should act analogically but think digitally. We have to benefit from all the opportunities that technology has to offer, but present the results with elbow grease and emotion,” he said.
