A special operations police officer was killed on March 29 after being severely wounded in clashes between the security forces and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants in the southeastern province of Şırnak.

Volkan Çay died in the Şırnak Military Hospital, where he was taken after being injured by a bullet fired by a militant from a sniper amid clashes between security forces and PKK militants.

The body of Çay, 24, was sent to his hometown of the southern province of Adana for a funeral. His funeral service was attended by 5,000 people and was guarded by sharpshooters and commandos under the Gendarmerie Regional Command.

Extensive operations are ongoing against PKK militants in Şırnak, the Nusaybin district of the southeastern province of Mardin, and the Yüksekova district of Hakkari province, where curfews remain in force.
