Soldier killed in PKK attack near Iran border
IĞDIR
One Turkish soldier was killed and two others were injured in a PKK attack in Turkey’s eastern Iğdır province bordering Iran, state-run Anadolu Agency said on Jan. 4.
The incident took place when a group of PKK militants opened fire at a 10-member commando unit patrolling near Emince village of Aralık district at 02.30 a.m. local time [1130 GMT], the agency said.
The security forces retaliated the attack, “neutralizing” one PKK militant and injuring two others.
Turkish authorities often use the word “neutralized” in their statements to imply that the militants in question either surrendered or were killed or captured.
According to hospital sources, the injured soldiers are in stable condition.
The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union.
