Six workers were hospitalized due to gas poisoning in a coal mine that belongs to Demir Export in the western Turkish province of Manisa’s Soma district early on April 26.

The workers were poisoned because of gas that piled up as a result of a malfunction in a compressor pumping fresh air into the coal mine close to the mine where 301 workers died in 2014 in the biggest workplace disaster in Turkey’s history.

“We are going to the scene. We will examine the scene of the accident and act accordingly. We were told that six workers were hospitalized. It seems like partial gas poisoning but there is no immediate danger,” Soma District Governor told Anadolu Agency, while adding that the gas was carbon monoxide.

The workers were evacuated with the help of other workers, before taken to the Soma State Hospital in ambulances.

All 50 workers were evacuated from the coal mine that started production last year, reported Doğan News Agency.
