Sipahioğlu remembered in Paris

Graduates of French schools in Turkey commemorated the life of Gökşin Sipahioğlu, photojournalist and founder of Sipa Press, in a ceremony in Paris over the weekend.

The ceremony was held by an association the graduates founded in Paris, of which Sipahioğlu was an honorary chairman. He died in October this year.

The event featured a film highlighting Sipahioğlu’s life and some of his most famous photos of the May 1968 youth riots in France.

Sipahioğlu covered some of the defining news stories of the 20th century, from the Cuban Missile Crisis to the Prague Spring and the attack on Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics. He launched Sipa in 1973, and the agency went on to represent some of the world’s best known photographers.

Sipahioğlu’s wife Phyllis Springer, Turkish Consul General to Paris Uğur Arıner, the chairman of the graduate association Marc Buker and his colleagues Coşkun Aral, Mete Zihnioğlu, Ferit Düzyol, Gül Düzyol and Elif Su Alkan were among the guests of the ceremony along with many of his friends.
