Siemens to join energy project in Iraq

Siemens Turkey is to build 24 electricity distribution centers in Iraq.

Siemens Turkey is to construct 24 electricity distribution centers, worth a total of 62 million euros, within the framework of an Iraqi energy infrastructure development project, the company announced in a statement on April 3.

Siemens Turkey’s Infrastructure and Cities sector will work together with Japan’s Toyota Tsusho which won the Iraqi government’s tender for this project.

Toyota Tsusho and Siemens Turkey have signed a deal to join forces in the project that aims to develop the energy supply in Iraq. Siemens will build 24 transformer distribution centers for Toyota Tsusho that will have a 31.5 megawatt capacity in total. The products will be manufactured in both Turkey and Europe for the project that will be operated by Siemens.

“These centers will help to make energy supply in Iraq more safe and reliable. Improving the energy infrastructure will support Iraq’s economic and social development,” said Ralf Christian, an executive of Siemens.

Iraq has boosted the works to modernize its infrastructure in order to provide sustainable energy to all its people. However, the International Energy Agency said Iraq could satisfy only 55 percent of its energy demand in 2011.
