Roma actors working to stage ‘Hamlet’

The Turkish Roma Theater Club has been working to stage the Roma version of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” with the aim of brining talented Roma artists to the Turkish theater.Roma People Confederation head Ahmet Çokyaşar said, “One of our organizations in the confederation is the theater club, which carries out significant projects around Turkey. The club has staged good plays in primary schools. With the support of public bodies, we have plans to organize talent shows to increase [the number of] Roma children in theater.”
Stating that the federation was working to increase the living standards of Roma people in Turkey, Çokyaşar added, “We are not shown accurately on televisions and theater stages. We will no longer allow such productions in Turkey. The policy of the Roma people should be told by the Roma people. The Roma Theater Club is one of the most important formations in Turkey to reverse our bad image. Its primary goal is to gift talented Roma youth to Turkey.”
The head of the Roma Theater Club, Mustafa Kemal Kurttekin, said they were working to stage the Roma version of Shakespeare’s famous play “Hamlet,” adding they had asked renowned singers to take part in the project.
