Prosecutor in Ergenekon asks to not merge cases

The prosecutor in the ongoing Ergenekon coup plot trial has asked the court not to merge the case with two similar cases, the OdaTV and OYAK cases.

The prosecutor has also demanded the case file from the court to prepare his deliberation. This demand hints at the possibility that the case is coming to an end, as the suspects will be asked for their last words after deliberations.

OdaTV, whose suspects include journalists Ahmet Şık, Nedim Şener and Soner Yalçın, is accused of being a media organization for the alleged Ergenekon gang, while the Oyak case is based on allegations that video footage of a shooting at the Council of State that killed one person in 2006 was deleted by the Defense and Security Systems Company of the Turkish Armed Forces Pension Fund (OYAK).

Ergenekon is an alleged ultranationalist gang accused of plotting to overthrow the government by fomenting chaos in society. The case includes 275 suspects, 66 of whom are under arrest, and 18 of the indictments have been merged.
