Practical Kurdish master’s program opened

Dicle University has opened a master’s degree program aimed at training Kurdish teachers, daily Radikal reported yesterday.

The program, approved by the Higher Education Board (YÖK), has a total of 150 places. Currently, 120 people are receiving education to teach the Kurdish dialect of Kurmanji, while 30 others are study in the Zazaki dialect, at Diyarbakır’s Dicle University.

The program was opened in the wake of the decision by the Education Ministry to offer elective Kurdish language courses to students. It will not contain a thesis writing requirement, but will focus more on training students for later careers.

Students who successfully complete the program of the two-term course will be able to pursue a variety of career options. They will be eligible to become Kurdish teachers or scholars of Kurdology, by completing their doctorate at the Kurdish Language and Literature Department, and will also be able to work as Kurdish consultants.
