Police officer killed in clashes with the PKK in curfewed town

A police officer was killed in an operation against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in a town under curfew in southeastern Turkey on Jan. 12, security officials stated.

The officer was injured during a security operation in the Cizre district of the southeastern province of Şırnak and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, Anadolu Agency reported.

One soldier and two police officers were also wounded during clashes in Cizre’s Nur neighborhood. The town has been under curfew since Dec. 4, 2015.

Since Dec. 15, 2015, when security forces stepped up operations against the PKK in towns and cities across Turkey’s southeast, 305 PKK-aligned militants have been killed, the military has said.
