Police officer killed by gunshot in Turkey’s southeast
DİYARBAKIR
The policeman was trying to dispose an improvised explosive device in Diyarbakır’s Sur district, where a curfew has been in effect for eight days, when he was shot in the head in a sniper attack.
He was immediately rushed to the Dicle University Medical Faculty Hospital, but succumbed to his wounds during treatment.
The bomb he was trying to defuse was placed near the 500-year-old Kurşunlu Mosque, which caught fire on Dec. 7 during clashes in Sur. Sur is the historical district where Diyarbakır Bar Association head Tahir Elçi and two police officers were killed in a shootout on Nov. 28.
