PKK members killed as clashes continue in eastern Turkey

Five members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) have been killed in clashes in the eastern province of Bingöl amid other clashes in the region, daily Hürriyet has reported.
 
Security forces came into contact with a group of PKK members in Bingöl last night at around 11 p.m. The clash occurred when the militants refused to surrender and instead opened fire on troops.
 
Three female and two male members of the organization were killed in the clash. Weapons, grenades and cash were retrieved from the bodies.
 
The Bingöl Governor’s Office said close to 60 PKK members had been either killed in battle or detained in the area in the past 18 months. Twenty-two militants were taken alive, while the other 38 were died in clashes.
 
Clashes also continued in the eastern province of Hakkari’s Çukurca district where bombing lasted well into the morning hours. Army helicopters were reportedly transferred to the area as reinforcements.
