The United States is increasing its capabilities in the critical Strait of Hormuz to respond to any threats from Iran over the key waterway, the Los Angeles Times has reported.

New mine-sweeping ships and helicopters will be added to the American forces that are currently in the strait between southern Iran and Oman, U.S. Navy Adm. Jonathan Greenert recently said.

Weaponry will also be upgraded, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Washington needs to increase its strength in the area to set the stage, Greenert said.

Iran has been showing off its capabilities in the Strait over the past few months, building up strong naval forces.

Tehran has said it could close the strategic strait, a move that would send global oil prices skyrocketing upward.
