‘On strike’ signs lifted from Çaykur’s office

The “on strike” sign on the head office building of Turkey’s General Directorate Tea Enterprises (Çaykur), which was hung by the Tekgıda-İş labor union two days ago, has been removed.

Around 10,000 workers at 58 enterprises went on strike for the first time in Çaykur’s history two days ago to protest against unpaid social aid and forbidden collective labor agreement rights. The workers hung “on strike” signs on Çaykur’s buildings to start the strike.

The strike, however, appeared to end today as most of the workers returned to work again. The “on strike” signs on the head office building and some of Çaykur’s factories were lifted. Representatives of Tekgıda-İş said the strike was continuing on legally, so they wanted the signs to be hung again.

‘On strike’ signs on factories

“On strike” signs were then hung on the factories but not on Çaykur’s head office building. A press release is expected from the president of Tekgıda-İş, Mustafa Türkel, tomorrow.

İmdat Sütlüoğlu, the general manager of Çaykur, claimed that the union representatives had made a statement showing that the strike was continuing on paper. “We are on track,” he added.
