Ömer Uluç’s masterpiece auctioned

At a size of 250 x 880 centimeters, Ömer Uluç’s ‘Ölüdeniz’ is one of the biggest works in the art of Turkish painting.

“Ölüdeniz,” the last masterpiece by leading Turkish painter Ömer Uluç, who died in 2010, was sold for 950,000 Turkish Liras at the 283rd auction of the Antik A.Ş. Auction House held at Antil Palace.

The auction, which received great attention from collectors, offered works by leading contemporary Turkish artists.

Exceeding the opening price

The opening price for Uluç’s “Ölüdeniz” was 700,000 liras. Depicting the artist’s own life, the piece is one of the biggest masterpieces in Turkish art at a size of 250 x 880 centimeters. 

Another piece by a leading Turkish sculptor, İlhan Koman, found a new owner for 415,000 liras. The work, from the artist’s “Stockholm” series, dates back to 1960 and had been kept in the İlhan Koman Foundation collection. Canan Tolon’s abstract works were sold for 475,000 and 225,000 liras in the auction, while Erol Akyavaş’s “Figures” found a buyer for 345,000 liras, “VAV” for 290,000 liras and “Lost Dervish” for 260,000 liras.

Other works sold at the auction were Burhan Doğançay’s “Walls,” and “Red Sox.” The former was sold for 305,000 liras and the latter for 176,000 liras.
