New meat label draft on the way

After certain Turkish red meat products, specifically sausages and sucuk, were found to contain poultry and soy substitutes, Justice and Development Party (AKP) deputy Dr. Yunus Kılıç has prepared a draft regulation that calls for a ban on sausage and sucuk made with mixed meat products.

“We will know what we are paying for and what we are eating. In this way we will also be paving the way for fair competition,” Kılıç told daily Hürriyet. He said when a consumer goes to the market they have a selection of sausages ranging from 3 to 40 Turkish Liras. “There can’t be sausages for 3 liras,” he added criticizing the ultra low price.

Draft to be ready by end of 2012
The draft will be ready by the end of the year, said Kılıç, adding that companies would be given a window of time to pull their existing products from the shelves. New products will have to prove that they contain only the meat they are marketed as, said Kılıç.
