Nearly 7,000 children adopted in 10 years in Turkey

Nearly 7,000 children were adopted in the last 10 years in Turkey, according to data from the Family, Labor and Social Services Ministry.

But the figure, which was 869 in 2015, dropped to 510 as of November 2019.

A family who applied to the Turkish Parliament’s Petition Commission from the Aegean province of Denizli stated that the babies they adopted could still not benefit from the social insurance during a one-year period until their official registration.

The family requested that their adopted babies should be able to benefit from the public insurance and the commission, which processed the petition and forwarded the request to the ministry.

Listing the adoption conditions, the ministry stressed the need for the minor to be looked after and raised by the adopter for at least a year.

In the response the ministry sent, the number of adoptions by years was also included.

While 538 children were adopted in 2010 and 869 in 2015, this figure dropped to 510 as of November 2019, according to the data.
