The office of the mufti in the Türkoğlu district of the southeastern province of Kahramanmaraş has formed
a team to prevent divorces and fight domestic violence.

The team, composed of 21 women, is conducting phone calls with women in troubled families, holding interviews and organising home visits when necessary.

Following the reports presented by the team, the mufti of the district, Hacı Bilal Polat, holds meetings with the men in question.

"We have managed to reach 60 families so far, with whom we have held meetings. Twenty families have not divorced thanks to our efforts," Polat said.

According to recent figures, the number of divorces in the third quarter of 2012 in Turkey decreased by 2.8 percent - a total of 25,295 divorces - compared to the same quarter last year.
