A Diyarbakır Court has rejected a claim for damages filed by a woman who fell from her roof and became permanently disabled while washing the school’s carpets in lieu of her son’s tuition fee, Doğan News Agency reported today.
Elif Satık fell from the roof of her house in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır in 2009 while she was washing the carpets for her son’s school because she was unable to afford the 20-Turkish Lira tuition fee
Satık sued the Education Ministry after she became permanently disabled despite receiving treatment.
But the court rejected her demand that she be paid 210,000 Turkish Liras in compensation, ruling that the school had not forced Satık to wash the carpets but that she had instead done so voluntarily and that her fall was her own fault.
Satık's lawyer, Yavuz Baraz, said they would file an appeal against the decision.
