A tender for a third airport in Istanbul with an estimated annual passenger capacity of 100 million will be held May 3, Transportation Minister Binali Yıldırım said today. The airport will have three runways that will be suitable for major planes such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787, the minister said.
Istanbul's current Atatürk International Airport and the smaller Sabiha Gökçen Airport on the Anatolian side of Istanbul are barely meeting increasing passenger demand.
Many international actors might also eye their chances on the third airport project, sources familiar with the tender process have previously said.
