Militants detained at Syrian border

ŞANLIURFA

Turkish security forces intercepted and detained four alleged militants of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) after they infiltrated Şanlıurfa’s Akçakale district through the Syrian border at dawn on April 29.

The four militants reportedly crossed into Turkey to stage a bomb attack, while law enforcement officials allegedly found a document pertaining to bomb manufacture, a flash memory, a memory card and a sim card on the suspects.

Police and gendarmerie units had implemented tight security controls after they received intelligence concerning a group of PKK militants set to cross the border to stage an attack inside of Turkey.

Suspects İ.K., H.D., M.N.T. and Y.A., who were identified only by their initials, had criminal records in acts of terrorism and had received explosives training at PKK camps, according to reports.

The four suspects will be turned over to the court following the completion of their interrogation at the police anti-terror department.

The PKK is recognized as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
