MHP’s Mayor detained in operation

The police force’s Department for Smuggling and Organized Crimes launched an operation in the northwestern province of Balıkesir’s Edremit municipality yesterday morning, detaining Edremit Mayor Tuncay Kılıç from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

According to claims, the operation was launched on the grounds that money and real estate had been illegally transferred to Edremit municipality’s Tourism, Construction, Advertising Limited Company (ED-BEL), and that illegal land sales had “damaged the public.”

Mayor Kılıç was detained and brought to the department office located in the District Traffic Directorate. Suffering from diabetes and heart disease, Kılıç became faint during questioning and was sent to Edremit State Hospital. After receiving treatment he was returned to the department office.

Units are continuing their searches in both the municipality and the company. Currently, no one is allowed in these buildings apart from the directors and chiefs of the police department.
