Man fined 5,000 liras for irrigating farm with sewage
İZMİR
Turkish authorities have fined a farmer 5,000 Turkish Liras ($886) for irrigating his 10-decare-farm with sewage in the western province of İzmir’s Tire district, daily Yeni Asır reported on Oct. 19.
The farmer, who was unidentified, was reported to be growing products such as cabbage, beans, broccoli, tomatoes, eggplant and cauliflower on his land and selling them for profit.
The municipal units reportedly said they had destroyed all the products before reaching the consumers and would not “make concessions” to anything that would put human health at risk.
Tire Mayor Tayfur Çiçek also made a statement regarding the incident, thanking the relevant municipal units for “being sensitive regarding this issue.”
“The use of water mixed with canalization, domestic sewage and industrial waste is dangerous for human and environmental health,” Çiçek was quoted as saying by state-run Anadolu Agency.
