A man died after a trapped bomb exploded as he was entering his abandoned home in an under curfew neighborhood in the Nusaybin district of the southeastern province of Mardin on Sept. 15.

Arriving at his home with four other people, Mehmet Sait Malak detonated the explosive, believed to have been planted by militants of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) under the ground floor. Malak was killed at the scene, the four people with him were wounded in the explosion.

The injured were taken to a police station for questioning. Police have since reported that Malak fled the war in Syria and held a Turkish passport.

A curfew was declared on March 14 in the restive Nusaybin, where Turkish security forces have been clashing with the PKK. The curfew was lifted on July 25 in 12 neighborhoods of the town.
