Low-cut dresses should not be subject to political interference but the recent controversy over a prominent TV host’s dress has been overemphasized, according to ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Istanbul deputy Nimet Baş, who said the AKP had “guaranteed people’s lifestyles and forbidden discrimination.”

“This is not subject of politics, let’s put that aside. I cannot comment on a politician’s remarks. But I can say my own opinion. I do not find it right to make such statements, but the criticism [that the lifestyles in Turkey are under pressure] is not reflected in reality. We are talking about a government that gives penalties for discrimination and guarantees lifestyles,” she said in an interview with daily Hürriyet published Oct. 14.

Gözde Kansu was dismissed from private station ATV after ruling AKP spokesperson Hüseyin Çelik criticized her dress on a show that she was presenting. While refraining from giving a name, Çelik said he found the dress “extreme” because of its open cleavage. He later defended his right to express an opinion and described the discussion on the issue as “ill-intended.”
