An industry group expects the demand for Turkish aquaculture products, which makeup one of Turkey’s leading export sectors, to expand in North Africa, following a regional trade fair.
Turkey’s Aquaculture Products Promotion Group (STG) attended the 5th Agro-Libya 2012 International Food, Food Packaging and Agricultural Fair to introduce Turkish aquaculture products to the North African market, according to the Aegean Exporters Union (EİB). A total of 120 participants from 12 countries attended the fair, 52 of which were Turkish companies, said Vehbi Merzeci, vice president of STG.
In 2011 Turkey exported $394,000 worth of aquaculture products to Libya, consisting entirely of sea bream. “In the first four months of 2012, we achieved exports of $372,000 and caught up to 2011. After STG attends a fair, our exports to those countries show a huge jump, and we expect such a boom in the Libyan and North African markets as well,” said Merzeci.
